Petros - the world's most famous pelican

Per Nørgaard

Petros was a pelican who lived on Mykonos from 1958 to 1985. It strolled around Mykonos town and became the island's mascot. It was found by a fisherman in a dilapidated condition and taken to the town where it was cared for by the residents. It received food and loving care and regained its strength. Petros settled in well and became part of the cityscape, photographed by countless tourists. The pelican adorned both T-shirts, postcards and souvenirs and became famous far beyond Mykonos' borders. It got to greet both Jackeline Kennedy Onassis, actress and animal protection campaigner Brigit Bardot and Iranian Queen Soraya.
