One of the major sights in the Gavrio area is Peter's Tower, Andros' best-preserved ancient monument. It sits at a height of approx. three kilometers from the port. It is a lookout tower from the fourth century BC built with colossal, rounded stone blocks. The tower is an impressive twenty meters high, has five floors and a diameter of nearly ten metres. The myth says that dragons worked with the stones for the tower, and that grooves in the rock are claw marks from dragon feet. There is a disused copper mine nearby and a marked hiking trail between the tower and Gavrio.
