Homer - the great hero of Ios

Per Nørgaard

Greece's great poet, Homer, who is said to have written the heroic epics "The Illiad" and "The Odyssey", according to a somewhat fanciful story, spent his last days on Ios where he is also supposed to be buried. The presumed burial site is at the inaccessible site of Psathopyrgos at the very top of the northeastern part of Ios, 13 kilometers from Chora. From the car road there is a stone walkway up to the burial site. There are some ruins there, probably from an ancient tower, and a tombstone which says that this is where he ended his days, the great master. There is a bust of him at the port of Gialos.
