Experience the of history on Milos

Per Nørgaard

Tripiti is the old town of Milos, where you can see the site where the famous statue was found, the Roman amphitheater and the catacombs. A sign clearly shows where to go. It is not too far. You first follow a street, and then you take a side road to the right, and then you are not too far from the historical places. There is not much to see where the Venus de Milo was found, only the remains of an old city wall and a tourist information about the find. A little further down you will find the Roman amphitheater. It looks as if it is carved into a cliff. It is relatively well preserved. It is true that some building parts are missing, which have probably been used as foundations for churches and residential buildings over the centuries, but you get a good impression of what it looked like in Roman times. From the seats, the spectators had a great view of the sea.

Not far from the theater a road leads to the catacombs, which are labyrinths of passages and open spaces carved into the rock. Here the first Christians secretly performed ceremonies, and here they buried their dead. The catacombs, which are among the most famous in the world, have a total length of 184 metres, and the height varies from 1.70 to 2.50 metres. The complex consists of three separate catacombs, but only one is open to the public. The archaeologists reckon that several thousand Christians have been buried here, but so far only 300 graves have been found. The catacombs were put into use in the second century AD . during the persecutions of the Christians in the Roman Empire.
