Aegiali - the gateway to Amorgos

Per Nørgaard

The town of Aegiali and the surrounding nature has everything that Greek enthusiasts like us appreciate - small cozy taverns and cafes under shady tamarisk trees, shops, a ferry office, rental agencies and luckily a bakery where we could go in every morning and buy freshly baked bread. The town has long and fine beaches without rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, and perhaps best of all: a perfect starting point for many of the island's hiking trails, including to the neighboring towns of Potamós, Lagáda and Tolária, and to Chora 20 kilometers to the south.

The sailing to Aegiáli is an experience in itself. The harbor with the snow-white towns in the background clinging to the mountainside and the 820 meter high mountain Krikellos in the background is a great sight.

Aegiáli is located on a sloping terrain, so you must be prepared for a downhill when you have been to the beach and are going back to the hotel. Most of the hotels are located on the slope up from the harbor in the direction of the town of Potamós, which looks as if it is located on a mountain shelf.
